Verona and its territory
VERONA
Romantic, vibrant, sophisticated Verona: all waiting to be discovered.
Verona is second only to Rome for its very well-preserved Roman remains within the city walls. Strolling through the streets of its historic city centre, which is a UNESCO heritage site, is like travelling back in time, experiencing the grandeur of the Della Scala (‘Scaligers’) family, which ruled over the signoria (seigniory) of Verona, the churches and monumental palaces steeped in history, and the Venetian and Austrian fortifications.
LAGO DI GARDA VENETO – LAKE GARDA
Italy's largest lake, a paradise for water sports and outdoor activities.
A Mediterranean oasis of only a few square kilometres where you experience the sensation of a spectacular coastline, against the background of gentle rolling hills overlooked by majestic mountains, making this a unique site to be enjoyed all year round.
VALPOLICELLA
A historic region and home to fine wines.
The Valpolicella hills are the heartland of some of Italy's most prized wines: they are all red, and the king of them all is the Amarone, to be enjoyed accompanied by a Valpolicella Classico or a Recioto, as you stroll through rows of fine grapes and ancient villages, majestic Veneto villas and monumental gardens, or simple rural stone courtyards. LESSINIA
The Verona mountains.
This area forms part of the Venetian Pre-Alps, which include the magnificent Lessinia Regional Nature Park. Lessinia itself is a gently sloping mountain, perfect for restful and respectful visits with beautiful landscapes sculpted by nature, offering surprising unexpected glimpses of stone-built villages and hamlets. Traditions remain alive here - the traditions of the ancient Cimbri, as well as the unique flavour of the local cheeses, or the 'malga gnocchi' to be enjoyed at high altitude. SOAVE – EST VERONESE
Make your way through the Soave lands, where perched villages, rural hamlets, mediaeval castles and old Veneto villas nestle in the rocky hills. All surrounded by sprawling vineyards. This is the home of the renowned Soave wine, so ancient and so refreshing, a delight both to the eye and the discriminating palate. Soave has been awarded the Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club, and is a delightful town surrounded by mediaeval walls crowned by the Scaligero Castle of the Della Scala family, keeping watch over the land. A perfect starting point from which to embark on a journey of discovery. Find out more on eastverona.com
THE DOGES' PLAIN (PIANURA DEI DOGI)
Earth, water and sky. Here, for centuries, time has been paced by the traditions of the peasant culture and the slow rhythm of the changing seasons - a world of canals, paddy fields, oases and fortifications defending the borders to the south of Verona. In the Verona countryside you will come across the Romanesque parish churches and ancient courtyard houses. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the wealthy landowners began to convert these rural dwellings into their country retreats. And when landowners gathered in the courtyards with their farmers and the women cleaning rice to eat all together, guess what their main dish would have been: a delicious risotto made with Verona's very own Vialone Nano rice.
